The Gospel

For new Christians, opening up and reading the Bible can often become overwhelming. The number of books, verses, and stories to read are endless, and sometimes it feels impossible to know where to begin reading. No matter where people choose to begin, each word that is read will bring the reader back to the gospel, and show who Christ is. Many believers agree that new Christians should pick the book of John to read during one of their first months of Christianity. One of the key verses in John is found in chapter 14, verse 6.

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

Through this one short verse, we are pointed back to the Gospel. Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again the third day. Through this truth of the Gospel, we are able to come to the Father.

Jesus’ statement in the verse feels bold to some. He states that He is the ONLY way to the Father: not through good works or church attendance, but through Jesus, the Son. If anyone is looking for a way to the Father, they can find this way through Jesus Christ.

Jesus states that He is the truth. In today’s world, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and some believe truth to be subjective to each individual. Jesus declares that He alone is truth, and those who worship must believe that truth comes from Him alone.

Lastly, Jesus goes on to declare that He is the life.  This human body fails daily.  As we grow older, life becomes more evidently fleeting with each breath that is taken. Jesus tells us that we can have true life in Him. The life found in Him is everlasting life — a life with the Father.

While the Gospel truth can seem overwhelming to those who do not know Him, it provides hope to those who are found in Him.  Christians can rest in knowing that this life is not the end. Christ has conquered death and defeated this temporary life. May we rest today in this blessed promise.
