Love
Christian love is a fundamental aspect of the Christian faith, but it differs from the type of love that is the focus of this season. It is a love that is not self-seeking, but rather selfless and sacrificial. This kind of love is characterized by patience, kindness, humility, forgiveness, and perseverance. In 1 Corinthians 13:4-8, the Apostle Paul gives us a powerful description of what Christian love should look like:
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."
Patience is a virtue that is central to Christian love. Love is patient because it is not easily angered and does not hold grudges. This means that we must be willing to wait for the right time, be understanding of others, and show restraint in the face of adversity. We must also be kind, treating others with love and respect, even when they do not deserve it.
Humility is another key aspect of Christian love. Love is not proud, boastful or self-centered. Rather, it is focused on the needs of others and is willing to put their interests above our own. We must be willing to serve others and sacrifice our own desires for their benefit.
Forgiveness is also an essential part of Christian love. Love does not keep a record of wrongs but is quick to forgive. We must be willing to forgive others, even when they have hurt us deeply. This means letting go of bitterness and resentment and choosing to love instead.
Finally, Christian love is characterized by perseverance. Love always protects, trusts, hopes, and perseveres. We must be willing to endure difficulties and trials, holding on to the hope and faith that God will see us through.
In conclusion, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 provides a powerful description of Christian love. It is a love that is patient, kind, humble, forgiving, and persevering. As Christians, we must strive to embody this love in our relationships with others. By doing so, we will not only bring glory to God but also show the world the power and beauty of God's love.
